365 Days of Defiance, Day 63: Three Simple Rules for Punching a Nazi

Daredevil battles Hitler! That's Bart Hill, the Golden Age Daredevil (aka Doubledare, Reddevil, and Death-Defying 'Devil), not Matt Murdock, the Silver Age and beyond Daredevil. I mean, not that Matt Murdock wouldn't punch Hitler, but I just can't see him doing it. (Neither can he! BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!)

Panels from "Fighting Hitler and His Jungle Hordes" in Daredevil Comics #1 (Lev Gleason, July 1941), script and art by Charles Biro (?)

Daredevil is captured, but luckily he has friends. With an elephant. Even Deadpool hasn't tried that trick!

Then Hitler gets his mustache shot off.

So, if'n you're gonna punch a Nazi: 1) Do it hard. 2) Do it with an elephant. 3) Shoot his mustache off!

Today in newuniversal History, March 2, 2006, 11:54 PM: Not everybody makes it out alive of Day 1

from newuniversal #3 (April 2007), script by Warren Ellis, pencils and inks by Salvador Larroca, colors by Jason Keith, letters by Rus Wooton

That wraps this up: there's not many more March 2 timed and dated panels in the newuniversal comics, and to be fair, there's not that many newuniversal comics left anyway. After a six-issue miniseries and a small handle of one- (and two-) shots, the line dwindles away and the story has no conclusion. Compared to the original New Universe, the newuniverse has a pretty short life.

See? I told you that without Kickers, Inc., a New Universe is just not worth it.

365 Days of Defiance, Day 61: The drink you drown your troubles in is the trouble you're in now

Sometimes the act of defiance that matters most in your life is not against a supervillain or an oppressive political regime, but against a literal demon! Oh, wait, a figurative demon. A demon...in a bottle! And you know what they say about bottles: phenomenal cosmic powers...itty bitty living space! Also: you can return 'em for a deposit at Safeway.

Panels from Iron Man (1968 series) #128 (November 1979); co-plot and script by David Michelinie; breakdowns by John Romita, Jr.; co-plot and finishes by Bob Layton; colors by Bob Sharen; letters by John Costanza

It's dressed up with all the wordy melodrama of a '69 Stan Lee-scripted Silver Surfer saga, and it's one of the classic important stories that probably would have benefitted from 2000s' style decompression, because it all happens and is resolved so very fast, but the fight of Tony stark against alcoholism still remains a powerful storyline, one that hasn't been retconned away and which still influences the Tony of today in virtually every story: a man who loves analytical thought, tempted by something that makes him lose it.

The comic basically breezes over this torment in a handful of pages. Tony's battle with alcoholism would return, though, most notably when he passes the armor to James Rhodes. For the moment, however, this is one of the most triumphant moments in the Marvel Universe: a little story about a victory as vital as chasing away Galactus.

You go, Tony...GOOD GRAVY WHERE DO YOU GET AN ORANGE SUIT?!?

Anyway, the sun's exploding.
